  • George The Plumber
  •

I was awoken last night by the sound of drip……drip……drip…. While my mind became fully alert my body did not. After a long sugar high weekend induced by costumes, trick or treating and of course candy my body gave out. While my brain recognized the need to get up and find the source of that awful dripping my body just did not want to cooperate. So instead I lay in bed and anticipated the next drip.

When I finally was able to function sometime in the a.m. hours I discovered the source of the problem that had kept me up most of the night. Now we all have things around the house that we are good at and that we totally despise. Anything to do with plumbing goes on the despise list for me. I think it was because I once had a leaky kitchen sink that it seemed as if no plumber could fix. Finally after a lot of money and time wasted I found a plumber who identified the source of the problem and was able to fix it. Since we were in the process of selling our house at the time this happened it felt like there was a lot at stake. I did not want to waste any more money on a home I was no longer going to be living in and I really did not have the extra time to hang around the plumber when there were a million things that needed to be done.

I am now in a really fortunate position to be surrounded by trustworthy contractors. So this morning instead of going through the Yellow Pages trying to decide which plumber to call, or phoning up my friends asking them if they knew anyone I simply called a plumber on my referral list. It was quick, it was easy and best of all my drip… drip… drip is once again quiet.

  • Tips For Living Greener At Home
  •

Tips For Living Greener At Home

If you are concerned about the environment and interested in creating a more eco-friendly  home, here are some tips to point you in that direction. These tips are not only good for the environment, but can also save you money.

    1)  Use Power Strips- Plug your stereo, television, computer and other home appliances in each room of your home into one power strip. Do the same with your kitchen appliances. When it comes time to go to sleep, simply flip the switch on the power strip to off. You can also do this if you are going to be out of the house for several hours. If certain appliances must stay plugged in for whatever reason, don’t forget to turn off the rest. Also unplug items such as cell phone chargers when not in use. Studies have shown that appliances left plugged in while not in use account for approximately 10% of your energy usage.

    2)  Use Ceiling Fans To Help Keep Air Circulating- In the summer time try setting your air conditioning somewhere in the upper 70’s and use your ceiling fan to help circulate the air in the room. The circulating air will help keep you cool. Blades should rotate in a counter clockwise direction in the summer and in the reverse direction in the winter. Ceiling fans can be a great addition to any home. They can help save you money on your cooling and heating bills and look great as well. One thing to remember is the ceiling fans only circulate the air, not actually cool or heat a room, so don’t forget to turn them off when you’re out of the room.

    3)  Cutting Back Energy Costs in the Kitchen- A couple of days a week try not to use all your major appliances. Cook your dinner in the microwave, toaster oven, or even eat meals you don’t have to cook. A salad is refreshing on a hot summer day topped with last nights left over chicken or steak. Salad, fresh fruit, and frozen yogurt or ice cream for dessert make a great light summer meal.

    4)  More Kitchen Savings- Use cloth napkins and towels versus paper napkins and paper towels. They can be washed and reused over and over again. This will save you money at the grocery store and save trees as well. Wash your dishes by hand and as an added bonus the leftover soapy water can be used to water your plants. Soapy water kills common household plant pests and waters your plants at the same time.

    5)  Save Water in the Bathroom- Simply turning of the faucet while brushing your teeth or shaving can save a significant amount of water. The average faucet has been shown to put out around three gallons of water per minute. The amount of savings can really add up both for your pocketbook and for the environment.

    6)  Save Gas Whenever Possible- Try combining errands when you go out, carpool to work or when driving the kids to school, and try to map out the shortest route to get to your destination. The air and your gas bill will thank you.

    7)  Don’t Forget the Bag and the Bottle- Invest in a cloth bag or two as well as a reusable water bottle. You can use your cloth bag not only at the grocery store, but anywhere you shop. Carry them in the car so that you always have them with you. A home water filtration system and some reusable water bottles ensure that you’ll never need to buy and lug heavy water bottles again. Keep some of your pre-filled bottles in the refrigerator to grab and go when you’re on the run.

Ready to Move? Perhaps You Should Remodel Instead!!
Finding the house of your dreams and putting your stamp on it is wonderful! Each year millions of people find and move into the house of their dreams. The problem with these dream houses is that as our lives continue to grow and expand our houses do not automatically adapt to our ever-changing needs.

Eventually the newlyweds have children, or the kids begin to grow up and all of a sudden your perfect home is not so perfect anymore. Is it time to start looking for a new nest or are you better off remodeling your home to suit your current lifestyle?

Both remodeling and moving require a big investment of your time and your money. Time and money; a rare commodity in today’s world. Before making a decision it is important to weigh all your options and your feelings regarding your current home. If you still love your home but would really like a new updated kitchen or a walk in closet consider remodeling. If all the warm fuzzy feelings about your house have been replaced with total dislike perhaps it is time to start looking. Other avenues to consider are how much you enjoy your neighborhood. How your commute to work would be affected by a move. Also if you have children consider the schools that your children may be attending. Will they have to switch schools and how will this affect them?

If you do decide to move, a good real estate agent will be able to help you figure out how much to sell your existing home for, how much it will cost you to purchase a new home that will meet your current needs, and what it will cost to move. If you decide to move there are numerous low cost home improvements that can be done to help your current home sell more quickly. Remember the kitchen and the bathrooms provide the biggest return on your investment.

If you decide instead to remodel some things to take into consideration. What are the important projects that you want done? Is a general contractor or an architect necessary to these home improvement projects? How much will these projects cost? And finally, what monetary value will these improvements add to your home?

Should you decide to remodel it is really important to have a clear idea of what you want. The last thing you should do is change plans midstream of a job. This is one of the most expensive mistakes a homeowner can make. Once, you know what home improvement projects you want done it is important to speak to reputable contractors and get bids. Three bids from three different contractors is an important safety net for a homeowner.

Whichever decision you choose; moving or remodeling you need to make sure it is the right decision for your family. There are many options available as a homeowner as long as you take your time and research your options feel confident that you will make the right decision for you.
  • Eco-Friendly Landscapes & Gardens
  •
    ECO-FRIENDLY LANDSCAPES AND GARDENS

Let’s talk about lawn care. Turn away from pesticides that poison you, your pets, your kids, and the water supply. Instead try organic products. Not only do they work well, but you’ll notice a difference in how your lawn looks and feels.

Consider buying a “reel” mower versus a gas mower. Reel mowers are the old fashioned ones that you push yourself. Save money on gas and get some exercise in at the same time.

When choosing plants for your yard or garden, purchase ones that are grown locally. Other plants may be beautiful, but not suited for your particular climate. Purchasing locally grown plants ensures that they will grow well in your yard or garden and help promote the local growers. When checking out your local nurseries, be sure to ask questions like which plants are eco-friendly, how much water they require, and whether they need shade or sun? You can also check with a local landscaper for advice.

Try keeping a portion of your yard for natural plantings. Native wild flowers or plants that attract butterflies or birds are beautiful and will attract helpful insects into your yard as well.

When purchasing lighting for your yard most people think solar when they think green. Solar lighting is great, but be cautious which ones you choose. Many are made with toxic plastic resins and made for the short term instead of the long haul. Within a couple of years these lights will have to be replaced and because of what they’re made of, they are not recyclable. Definitely not eco-friendly! The good news is that if you search you can find solar lights plus many more items for your yard that are much more eco-friendly products. Check out websites like Amazon or Green Electronics for more eco-friendly products and ideas.

If you’re looking for a fountain or birdbath to add to your yard or patio, there are eco-friendly options available as well. They now make fountains and birdbaths with built in solar panels so that they are self sustaining. They’ll add beauty and attract colorful birds for your viewing pleasure.

If you live somewhere with a pool or beach access, you may want to consider installing a solar outdoor shower. You can get ones that are free standing, large enough for children and adults and only need to be hooked up to your garden hose. No heating costs because it’s solar and it uses minimal water.
  • Rooms To Escape To
  •

    Rooms To Escape To

Whether you call them man caves, woman caves, no kids allowed rooms, or family relaxation areas, everyone needs a place to escape to once in a while. We’ve all had those moments when we need a moment alone or to escape somewhere for a while. A place to gather with our girlfriends to “dish” or a place where the guys can congregate and be themselves. Or maybe you’re dreaming of a room that the whole family can gather to relax in or a place to entertain friends and family. Any and all combinations of these rooms are possible with a little imagination.

Creating this space can be as simple as utilizing a basement, spare room, or garage area that is not currently being used to it’s best potential. If you have the room, it is also possible to add on an extra room, conservatory, or even build a separate detached room somewhere on your property like a hacienda or mother-in-law suite. Consult with a local contractor or architect to see what your best options are.

Once you’ve decided where to put such a room, the next step is to decide what to put in it. If you had a room to escape to, what would it be? The options are limitless. Here are a few suggestions to get your mind warmed up and thinking.

Perhaps a comb ination gym and lounge area is what you had in mind. Put in your weights and desired gym equipment, a comfy couch and maybe a plasma television and stereo system, and you’ve got a great room.

If this is not what you had in mind, what about a game room with a pool table and a built in bar. Some high top tables, barstools, hanging television, stereo, and perhaps a pinball machine or slot machine for everyone to enjoy. This room would be enjoyable for family, friends, and even just some alone time. Another option for a game room could include putting in a card table for poker nights.

Maybe you have a hobby that’s become overgrown and you need a bigger space for it. You could create a hobby room for whatever your hobby may be. Whether it’s for a slot car track, a train set, scrap booking, or a place to store your collections, it could offer a respite to escape to and become totally engrossed in whatever you enjoy most.

If you enjoy the arts, maybe an art studio or combination dark room and photo studio would be more to your liking. You could add whatever art supplies, furnishings and equipment that you may need and spend your moments of quiet time relaxing enjoying something you love to do.

If you need a spare room as well as an escape, this is possible as well. You could make this space like a small apartment. Add a bathroom, a sleeper sofa, some comfy chairs and cozy furnishings. This may be a room where you can not only house guests but also escape to for some quiet television watching, reading, music, or just to gather with friends. It might also be a quite comfortable “dog house” for that occasional spat with your spouse.

Whatever you decide to do with your space is up to you. Feel free to let your imagination soar. It doesn’t have to be an expensive project if you utilize the space and things that you already have. Whatever you decide, enjoy yourself. You deserve it!

  • A Little Landscaping Goes A Long Way
  •
A Little Landscaping Goes A Long Way

Spring is here and Summer is just around the corner. The long hot days and cool nights of summer can be so much more enjoyable with great landscaping that will enhance the quality of time spent in and around your home. Landscaping is an important extension of your home that can provide beauty and character for many years to come.

When planning the steps for landscaping your home the first step should be to think about what you want to accomplish. What are your objectives for the space? How are your needs going to change and grow over time; and how much time do you want to spend maintaining it? Knowing what you want and need is the first step to planning your landscape. Whether you design it yourself or work with a professional it is important to identify your needs.

Before your brain goes off and running in a million different directions it is not fun but very necessary to think about a budget. How much money do you have set aside for your project? Perhaps it will be necessary to create a plan that can be accomplished in phases.

Drawing your plan is the next step. The base plan is the key to successfully creating a new outdoor living space. You don’t have to be a professional to draw one. Roughly sketch out the layout of your lot and house. Make sure to note all fixed elements such as trees. Add the essential elements such as property boundaries, fences, outdoor walkways and lighting. Once you have your base drawn out the fun begins. You can sketch multiple designs by placing tracing paper over your base plan and experimenting with numerous different designs. Keep sketching until you come up with a design that you love.

When planning your landscape think about the flow of the design. A good flow will offer a transition from your home to your outdoor living space. Keep in mind the traffic patterns that currently exist as well as how you will work around the slopes and various points in your yard. Visualize the plantings in different seasons with the different colors and shapes.

Your outdoors can be just as sophisticated and polished as the inside of your home. There are plenty of extra luxuries that can help to personalize your space while making it comfortable and useful. Built in fireplaces, planters and seating as well as outdoor bars and cooking spaces are fun additions to any backyard. Sculptures and fountains are inexpensive ways to add your own unique personality and design to your backyard oasis.

Professional experts can be helpful depending on how extensive your work is. It is important to know your professional. The best way to find your landscape professional is by asking someone you know like your friend, neighbor or other service professional such as a contractor referral service for reliable landscape contractors.

In addition to enhancing your outdoor living there are numerous landscaping steps that you can take to minimize your home’s impact on the environment. Using trees and vegetation can cut your summertime air conditioning use by shading all of the east and west facing windows. Shading windows from the outside with strategically placed trees or trellises with vines can not only help to keep your home cool but also provide a beautiful look both inside and out. In addition, spending more time cooking outdoors can keep the house cool and reduce the need for air conditioning. Using native plants to your area can reduce watering and maintenance. Keeping traditional lawn areas smaller and instead replacing with ground cover or hardscape. Recycling kitchen waste into garden compost is an effective and affordable way to keep your plants healthy and reduce your garbage.

There are several different types of hardscape available on the market today. Bricks and pavers offer a tremendous amount of versatility and offer a very traditional look. In addition pavers stay cooler, look nice and allow vegetation to grow through. Concrete and gravel can be an asset to your yard in that they can be poured into any shape and finished in a variety of ways. Tile and flagstone are other options.

Keep a running wish list of everything you want in your backyard, even if you think you can’t afford it. You never know when you will find a great deal. Collect pictures from magazines and photographs from friends’ homes.

Remember that beautiful landscaping will not only enhance your home life but it will also be beneficial to its resale value.

If you are planning a backyard landscaping project there are many reputable contractors that offer the necessary services and options. When choosing make sure the contractor is properly licensed. Always get multiple bids. Five Star Consumer Referrals, Inc, offers a free referral service to homeowners. While homeowners are ultimately responsible for who they choose to work on their home Five Star Consumer Referrals pre-screens its contractors through the California Contractors State License Board.
