Ribbit Tree and Plant, the Westside’s newest nursery
Bridget and Lori with a section of Australian fencing
Ribbit Tree and Plant started life about a year ago on the side of the road " literally. Owners Bridget Blake-Wilson and Lori Dovi were selling plants on the shoulder of Topanga Canyon Blvd., at the location of the old Sassafras Nursery (the first nursery I ever fell in love with and bemoaned by us old timers). Recently they purchased a gorgeous 2 1/2 acres of oak studded land just off Old Topanga Road. Bridget and Lori are starting out small but they have big ideas. The selection at Ribbit (don't you love the name) is lovely.  As well as a choice selection of trees, shrubs, vegetables and flowers, many of which are drought tolerant, they are distributors for the Australian fence product Ausbrush. They can provide landscaping, design, maintenance and even sprinkler design and installation. Since they live in the canyon, they want to give back and are starting out by making a picnic area on their land. Look for some surprises

Take a Look at Integrated Lighting Systems
Integrated Lighting systems are currently more of a school of thought than a clearly defined system. Several manufacturers offer packages which are referred to as Integrated Lighting, and each will offer a certain collection of features. The prevalent feature provided with these systems is versatility and resourcefulness. Different companies will normally combine their own mixture of sensors and ballasts which standardize the amount of power being used. A few designers use a mix of solar and electrical power to further shrink energy expenses, yet others just exploit  the effective use of ambient daylight to cut electrical usage. Depending on the needs of your institution, and the region you are located in, there are several features which could make your job less expensive. A nice option are solar power lights & sets.
Solar LED Lights have seen widespread use for decades, yet there are one or two problems which remain hard to solve. In some regions of the country, daylight hours

Neighbor Troubles
We had our first encounter with an angry neighbor yesterday, which isn't bad since we've been on this project since October. Actually he was perfectly pleasant, but not happy. It's the new guy next door - who hasn't even moved in yet - and he'd noticed that a) our workers are walking through his yard to get to our work and b) the foundation for the garden wall has encroached on his property. Naturally I fell on my sword and apologized - I don't want to annoy the neighbor before he's even moved in! - and said we'd stop the walking (which I had only noticed yesterday too) and fix the concrete. He said that they are in the permitting stage, and plan to get their work started in April. Just as we finish. Which also means that they'll be doing building work all through the summer. Nice.On the subject of concrete, Hubby and I went out this morning to have an inspect, and we weren't at all sure that the area outside the bedroom door is correct. There is a large landing pad which doesn't

Traffic Calming
Yesterday we had 15 trucks outside out house, including an enormous concrete mixer. Today was much quieter, just five vehicles. The landscaping crew continued their work on setting up the forms for the front yard concrete (due to be poured on Tuesday, weather permitting). I have to forgive them their last trench, upon which I poured such scorn, as it turned out to be the base for the courtyard wall. The guys from Jim's Bunch continued working away inside the house. They ripped out the inside of the closet in our bedroom. They have installed the dresser in our bedroom, and also finished off the wine fridge area in the kitchen. Various bumps and hammers from other parts of the house, tasks unspecified. Everything seemed quite calm today.Site Supervisor II declares that the job will be finished in six weeks.Photos here:i) The old hot tub box on the side of the house, where our predecessors kept the water chemicals and stuff. Growing up Latina: My Short Introspective
My parents' biggest fear in life was that we were going to be "that kid". The one that joined the local gang (Little Putos reigned my hood), the one that dropped out of high school in 10th grade, the one that got pregnant right after her Quinceañera, (like my cousin Esmeralda) or the one that ran away. So my brother and I became the opposite of that. We didn't play outside much, unless supervised; our teachers loved us, and became avid readers. But then, I started middle school.

Twenty seven million flowers
Dubai Municipality say they planted twenty seven million flowering plants in the city last year.Driving around you obviously see that a huge number of plants are put in and then pulled out as they die off, but an average of a million every couple of weeks is staggering. It's generally reported that we in Dubai are amongst the world's highest users of water, but I wonder where we stand if the water used for irrigation is taken out of the equation. My guess is that the total amount of water used is divided by the population number, and I can't find a breakdown of usage by sector. The relatively large amount of landscaping, parks, greenery, flowers across the city must take a large part of the total I would have thought. Most of the flower beds have the efficient drip-watering system, but there's a lot of wastage with the sprinkler system used for the grassy areas - this morning Al Sufouh Road was awash with water from the grass sprinklers.Perhaps we individual users aren't as wasteful as th

Domestic Toilet Hire For Renovation Work - Tips & Hints
A plumber can be your toilet hire and fix your sinks and fixtures, but a landscaper can do these things as well as landscaping the home garden by putting in an entire irrigation system into your lawn and garden. You see, the latter needs to know about plumbing before he can provide a sprinkler system to your geraniums. So, if you have a problem with the toilet, hire your landscape designer to do the job.
Although he needs to know about what size pipe to install, your garden professional will be able to place pvc under the ground, install a timer and set it, and make sure that everything is up to code and above ground the way it needs to be. This is important when you are planting and watering trees, flowers and shrubs. They may each need to be on a separate schedule and timed differently.
From flowers, to fruit trees, to gladiolas, your professional will be able to let you know if they will grow richly in your type of soil. Since each area of the country is different, you will need to

Consider Microclimates In Your Landscaping Plans
Wherever you live, and regardless of weather conditions in your area, your gardens will have their own special climate or microclimate which is brought about by several different local factors all working together. Among many influences, these factors include the direction your property sits, it’s protection from wind, how sunny or shady the property is, and how much slope there is. So as well as average conditions for your area, it is important to consider your site’s microclimate in its landscape design.
Any type of structure or building on your property can cause different effects on the microclimate. All your landscaping ideas could easily be effected by just one placement. A house can create a windbreak that alters the flow of air around it. There will be a warm area and a colder one created on either side of the building; and shade at certain times of the day. A fence or wall can have an effect on a garden or landscape just the same as natural features like trees and

Making Your Desert Landscaping Look Great
If you have a desert landscape there are many things that you can still do to transform it into something you can be proud of. Make sure you research about flowers and plants to see what can survive in the conditions that you are faced with.
Not everyone has the pleasure of having great land for their landscaping project and therefore it can be a lot harder for them. It could be that your land is like a desert where the plant growth is very rare and there is hardly any green grass. When the land is not looking very promising, it can be hard to imagine it looking good at all. The good news for people with land like this is that there are actually things that can be done in order to make it look better.
What Can You Do For Your Desert Landscaping Project To Make It Look Better?
To start with you will need to do quite a bit of planning. Because the land is not the best and the climate may be difficult, it does need a lot of thought. You need to have some idea on what look you want to achi

Landscape Lights Put Your Home In A Good Light
It is true that you never get a second chance to make a good first impression. That axiom holds true whether we are talking about job interviews or going on a first date, and it holds equally true when talking about our homes.
Having an impeccably appointed home interior is sure to make a great impression on friends and guests, but it is important to remember that by the time our guests enter our home the first impression has already been made.
When a guest arrives at your home for the first time it is likely that the first thing they will notice is the way you have landscaped the areas around your home. And if that guest arrives at night, then only landscape lights can illuminate the care and creativity you have put into your home’s surroundings.
Landscape design has become a multi-billion dollar industry. From gardens to hedges, fountains to benches, the landscape business has seen a constant rise in the attention to detail demanded by homeowners. So it is no surprise that land

Complete Edging With Landscaping Bricks
You can create beautiful and structurally sound designs in your yard through the use of landscaping bricks. Available in numerous designs, colors and styles, they can be used for short walls, flowerbed retaining walls and for paving a sidewalk or even your driveway.
Landscaping bricks are also available in many sizes to meet the needs of whatever project you are working on. Additionally, larger blocks are manufactured to look like landscaping bricks, making the installation for larger projects faster to complete. Bull-nose landscaping bricks look nice surrounding small flowerbeds and two-edge bricks can be used when both edges will be visible.
Building a sidewalk, for instance, is fairly easy with landscaping bricks, but be prepared for some physical labor. You can begin your project by lining the area in which you plan to site your sidewalk. Straight walks are easier to work with and will require no cutting of the bricks as will a curved walk. Dig down at least eight inches and insure

Knowledge Is Key In Landscaping Business
The absolute first thing about starting your own landscaping business is knowing what you’re doing. Since very few states have laws regulating this type business, just about anyone with a pickup truck, a shovel and a lawnmower can call themselves a landscaper.
The biggest mistake you can make when starting a landscaping business is to take on jobs that you are not capable of doing. By failing on one or two, word of mouth advertising will kill any chance you had of being a success.
Another issue common of people just starting out in a landscaping business is knowing what to charge for their services. Many make the mistake of not charging enough and end up going broke. Others may overcharge and find themselves with no business because their prices are too high. Starting your own landscaping business after working for an established company for a while, can be a benefit in knowing what rates to charge in your area as well as how to perform the task.

However, while these jagged rocks can make for great landscaping rocks for a more modern style, it is the rocks often found beneath the sand that make for the real landscaping ro

Gardening and Microclimates
A microclimate is the climate of a small, specific place within an area as contrasted with the climate of the entire area, or the "macroclimate." The climate of the entire area is indicated by where a region lies in the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone (simply "zone" for short). - ref. from about.comEach year I become more and more aware of the many microclimates within my own yard. This time of year is is a good time to check your plants as they begin to bud out and how different each area of your yard progresses. By knowing a few basic things to look for, you will be able to choose better locations for your plants, shrubs and trees.I always love a good demonstration on what that means, so when I found this I had to share it!Cornell University has written a wonderful article on recognizing and dealing with microclimates and is worth your time to read.Strolling through my yard, I can see the results of using some of these factors in where I place certain plants. Goodbye to the Closet, Hello More Cabinets
I can hardly contain my excitement about the progress in the landscaping, so I could go on and on about that; but I'll mention the wonderful progress inside the house too.The pocket door is completed in the kitchen/study (except for the insertion of the actual doors, which haven't arrived yet). Since the drywall has been done, we are now in position to complete the kitchen floor tile and install the cabinets for the wine fridges (which have been living in our dining room in huge boxes for over a month.) Lots of cabinets have arrived and the slow process of installing them all has begun. Photo here of the cabinet that fits between the wine fridges going in. Also a big heap of drawer units and bookcases in the office. As it was our weekly site meeting today, I got a peek at the bedroom/bathroom addition. (We may get more than a peek soon, as Site Supervisor II says that the dust wall will be coming down in a day or two.) The inside of the shower has been prepared by the tiler and is
